Results of the 2019 Diving Season with Healthy Seas
In the years since Ghost Diving started diving at shipwrecks and removing ghost gear, many diving groups around the world have been inspired and followed our "Dutch" example, establishing Ghost Fishing chapters in the UK, Greece, Lebanon, Egypt, South Korea, New Zealand, Costa Brava, Malta and most recently Poland.
Our mission is not only to clean up wrecks and reefs by removing ghost gear from the seas, but to also document our activities through photos and videos, in order to raise awareness about the terrible pressure this type of marine litter has on the marine environment and marine life in particular. It is estimated that 640,000 tons of fishing gear is left or abandoned in the seas and oceans each year (FAO/UNEP, 2009).
In 2019, our volunteer divers took part in many diving activities in the North Sea and not only. With our contribution, our partner Healthy Seas collected 3.000 kgs of fishing nets from the North Sea. These nets will be processed by Nofir and regenerated by Aquafil, along with other nylon waste, into ECONYL ® yarn, a sustainable raw material used for the production of socks, swimwear, sportswear, carpets and more.
Ghost Diving volunteer divers are often invited to speak and present their equipment at education programmes organised by Healthy Seas in the Netherlands, to inspire our youngsters to love and protect the marine environment.
