MAKO ‘s first Greek deployment: Ghost Farms

Together with our partner Healthy Seas, we intensify the battle against abandoned fish farms, so-called “Ghost Farms” in Greece.
Soon after successful MAKO ‘s move, she was immediately deployed on her first mission in Greece.

We carried out surveys at various locations in Greece, focusing on the west coast. The real-time picture of the situation was essential to take action. We based ourselves on surveys previously conducted by our partner organization OZON. They worked hard over the past year to scout a vast coastline in Greece for abandoned fish farms. OZON also investigated the pollution the ghost farms caused to the coastlines.

Unfortunately, but as expected, the pollution is present and large.
In the upcoming months we will start the follow-up to the previous projects Journey to Ithaca (2021) and Return to Ithaca (2022), where we worked to clean up Ghost Farms on a large scale.
